Identifying seasonal spatial patterns of crime in a small northern city

Abstract Objectives To explore spatial patterns of crime in a small northern city, and assess the degree similarity these across seasons. Methods Calls for police service frequently associated with (theft, break enter, domestic dispute, assault, neighbor disputes) were acquired five year time span (2015–2019) city North Bay, Ontario, Canada (population 50,396). Exploratory data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics kernel density mapping technique. Andresen’s point pattern test (SPPT) then used to between seasonal (spring, summer, autumn, winter) each call type at two different scales (dissemination area census tract). Results concentration street segments showed that calls are generally more dispersed through warmer seasons spring summer. Kernel also shows increases intensity hotspots times, but little overall change pattern. The SPPT does find some evidence differences as whole, specifically thefts enters. These focused on downtown core, well outlying rural areas city. Conclusions For various types examined, preliminary analysis, mapping, found consistent routine activities theory.
